Artwork Story

This artwork represents the Framingham Mission back home (Warrnambool, Victoria).

Aboriginal missions (also referred to as reserves) served as a way to segregate Indigenous people from the broader community. Aboriginal people would be placed on missions to live where they were prevented from engaging in cultural practices and speaking their own languages.

In this piece, you can see the road coming out of the mission is longer, symbolising my family’s journey moving off the mission and becoming apart of the broader community again. This piece serves as a reminder of the troubled history of mission life, but also the enduring strength of my family and culture.
