To put it simply, if a non-Indigenous person profits from Aboriginal culture, it constitutes cultural appropriation.
I’ve had a lot of messages after my story on Instagram (a non-Indigenous man, who sells Aboriginal artwork and plays the Didgeridoo at the Camberwell Sunday Markets).
Selling Aboriginal art and playing traditional Aboriginal instruments for donations, is a clear instance of cultural appropriation, as he is using Indigenous culture and traditions for personal gain without authentic connection, representation, or respect for the community he’s portraying.
Non-Aboriginal people can respectfully engage with Aboriginal culture by learning language, studying/learning our art, or participating in cultural activities. However, profiting from these cultural elements without permission is considered cultural appropriation, as it disrespects the significance and ownership Aboriginal communities hold over their traditions. True appreciation requires respect, understanding, and acknowledgment that certain aspects of the culture should not be commodified.
What can you do to help? Call it out. It doesn’t matter what your nationality is, everyone has an obligation to call this behaviour out.
I hope that makes sense and clarifies any questions you may have had.
